Dinner for schmucks is a remake of the 1998 French film Le Diner des Cons  and if you are looking for  great adaptation of the original you may feel disappointed. Instead this is a film that needs to be taken on its own merit. It has a lot of similarities to the original but just doesn’t keep up, but if you haven’t seen the original than you will have very different feelings about this movie.

Paul Rudd plays Tim a ambitious financial analyst who is finally on his way to the big leagues. But his boss dangles a promotion in front of him on one condition; that he comes to his dinner for extraordinary people and brings the biggest bafoon that he can find.  As luck would have it he meets Barry (Steve Carell) who makes little diorama mice creations and rather strange on top. Barry wrecks havoc on Tim’s life and is oblivious to the consequences o his actions especially when it comes to Tim’s relationship with his long time girlfriend Julie (Stephanie Szostak)

Once I disassociated this from the original I actually enjoyed the movie, it had some pretty funny moments that had me laughing and cringing at the same time. At times i did find that the movie was trying a little too hard and that some thing just didn’t work for me but all in all I did enjoy the movie and would say if you are looking for something that is not hard to watch and is just a simple bit of fun to fill in a Sunday night this could be the movie for you.
