Nice work American apperal

In today’s world it seems like the definition of beauty is someone who is 19 and stick thin. That is why I am so impressed by American apparels newest model Jacky O Shaughnessy.
First you may need to be in the know about their previous advertising techniques before I explain who jackie is. Up until now their techniques have involved almost ill looking girls wearing gold lame tiny pants, or just very young looking girls in dubious poses. Shot in a snuff film style. (Who dosen’t love a little snuff film action, when they are looking at fashion) Plus who could forget Isis king the transgender winner of America next top model.

Now we have Jackie a 60 old graying beautiful woman.

Although I’m really enthralled by their choice, I’m a little skeptical about their choice as a bit of a ploy, as I always am when a big company does something like this. I have to say this is in no way a reflection on Jackie who I think is amazing for doing the campaign, but more on an industry that has an age and size requirement. It seem that when it comes to fashion anyone who is of a certain age, plus sized or just not very thin or not that white it seems like they have just been cast for the press attention and not their beauty.
On the American apparel Facebook page they said of Jackie; “There was something so compelling about Jacky’s look and energy when we first spotted her in a New York restaurant this winter, we introduced ourselves and pulled up a chair. During a long discussion that touched on everything from career choices and nutrition to insights on relationships, age and beauty, we asked if she would consider being photographed by us. We were thrilled when she agreed. Here are some photos we’ve taken of Jacky over the last few months showing how she likes to wear American Apparel. We hope you enjoy them“.
What I love about this campaign is that recently there has been a lot of controversy about the lack of representation of older women in the media, even if this is for media attention this campaign shows that older women can still be sexy and it should not be a major thing that a older woman can be used in an ad campaign for all ages.
